Online conference

The teaching of orthography is of increasing concern to all actors involved in school education. Research across disciplines such as linguistics, cognitive psychology, French language didactics, sociolinguistics, and education science is advancing understanding of the conditions under which orthography is learned, evaluation of teaching practices, and the creation of practical applications of the resulting knowledge. At the same time, the spread of digital tools in society and in schools directly affects teaching methods, software and the use of social media (e.g. the educational tool Twictée), the greater roles that writing and written communication skills are playing in social and professional life with the increasing power of the Internet and changes in the conditions and methods of teacher education.

It was against this backdrop that the projectTwictée for Learning Spelling (Twictée pour Apprendre l’Orthographe, TAO) was conceived. Its initiators were teachers who wished to evaluate la twictée(“twictation” – a portmanteau of “Twitter” and dictée), an innovative educational tool with a digital component for teaching orthography. The Twictée Association, with three Academies (regional authorities of the Ministry of National Education), several university research laboratories (CIRCEFT, CHArt, LIDILEM, CREALEC), the Ecole Supérieure du Professorat et de l’Education (ESPE) of Créteil, and the Viaéduc-Canopé network answered a call for projects from e-FRAN to investigate the efficiency of la twictée and how it could be used effectively with different target groups. They also wished to analyse the extent to which the collaborative online work of “twictonaut” teachers promotes professional development in the domain of orthography.

This conference caps four years of committed research and collaboration. It represents an occasion to ask researchers to examine their approaches to orthography, its teaching, and the training of educators in this subject in dialogue with researchers in different fields and specialists in French orthography as well as in the orthographies of other languages. They will present their latest research to an audience not only of their colleagues, but also of educators and teachers, who will in turn present reports on their own experiences and ask questions of other participants. The conference seeks to extend and broaden the dynamic of collaboration that has already been established between the different actors in the instruction of orthography: educators, inspectors, pedagogical advisers, teachers, professors, etc., by centring the debate on the crossroads between research, application, and education and training.

The conference will take place online.
